WNMU Business Students Provide Free Tax Preparation Services Through VITA Program
Western New Mexico University (WNMU) announces the return of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for the 2026 tax season.
Free professional tax preparation for individuals with a household income of $69,000 or less.
IRS-certified WNMU business students will offer free tax preparation and electronic filing services to eligible community members starting February 2, 2026.
February 2, – April 2, 2026, Mondays and Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The site will be closed during Spring Break, March 9–13, 2026.

The VITA program at WNMU is a long-standing partnership between the university and the IRS. It provides Business Administration students with invaluable hands-on experience while offering a vital, free service to the Silver City and Grant County community. All student volunteers undergo rigorous IRS training and testing to ensure the highest standards of accuracy and confidentiality.
To ensure a complete and accurate return, taxpayers must bring:
- Photo ID(Driver’s license, state ID, or passport)
- Social Security Cardsor ITINs for all individuals listed on the return
- All Income Statements:W-2s, 1099s, and other relevant documents
- Health Insurance Information:Forms 1095-A, B, or C
- Banking Information:A voided check or account numbers for direct deposit of refunds
Prior Year Return: A copy of your 2024 tax return (highly recommended).
