On the edge of the Gila Wilderness lives the newly formed Mimbres Press out of Western New Mexico University in Silver City, where its members are striving to create an environment where authors can thrive. In a world where so few publishers control so much of the market, the goal of Mimbres Press is to be a destination for voices in southern New Mexico, according to WNMU President Joseph Shepard. Mimbres Press launches latest book: “Our Search for Meaning”

Mimbres Press of Western New Mexico University will launch Our Search for Meaning: A Humanistic Anthology on Friday February 25th, 6-7 p.m. at WNMU’s Miller Library. This book, which is used on WNMU’s Applied Liberal Arts and Sciences (ALAS) course, examines the intellectual history of western civilization within the context of four questions: What is truth? What is justice? What does it mean to be human? What is the good life? The book consists of excerpts from classic works ranging from The Epic of Gilgamesh to George Orwell’s 1984, alongside short essays contextualizing these works, and didactic material designed to get students discussing the four questions.

The book is co-authored by Dr.s Katherine Oubre and Phillip Schoenberg, with an introduction by Dr. Jack Crocker. Oubre is the Chair of the Humanities Department at WNMU, while Schoenberg is Assistant Professor of Philosophy and English. Crocker is Vice President for Academic Affairs.

At the launch, the authors will introduce the book, and WNMU students from the ALAS class will read and perform excerpts from classic works. The launch will be followed by complimentary food and drink. This event is free and open to the public and will also be broadcast via this Zoom link:  https://wnmu.zoom.us/j/82175664398.

Jack Crocker on “All About Books”

Inaugural Mimbres Press author Jack Crocker discusses his collection of poems, The Algorithm of I, with Lynn Moorer on All About Books, KTAL 101.5 fm. This program aired on November 26, 2021.

From the program blurb: “Crocker said his poems examine just how programmed we are when we are born and, after that, what are the influences that program us—our parents, where we were born, and the culture we grow up in. Sharing personal and philosophical insights, his poems reflect on his time living in Mississippi and Florida, then his relocation to New Mexico.  Crocker, as a long-time teacher of the art and craft of poetry, also shared several enlightening guidelines for students writing poetry.”

Mimbres Press Undergraduate Branch Chief Editor Calling for Submissions

Yen Chu, who received a Student Research and Professional Development funding award to aid her in creating an undergraduate branch of Mimbres Press at WNMU, to which she is the Ambassador-at-Large and Chief Editor.

Yen Chu, who received a Student Research and Professional Development funding award to aid her in creating an undergraduate branch of Mimbres Press at WNMU, to which she is the Ambassador-at-Large and Chief Editor.

This fall, Yen Chu received a Student Research and Professional Development funding award to aid her in creating an undergraduate branch of Mimbres Press at WNMU. “An undergraduate arm of Mimbres Press at WNMU will increase opportunities for students to gain experience in skills like editing, modifying their own work, and getting their own work published,” she said.

Appointed as a member of the Mimbres Press advisory board in May 2021, Chu was tasked with spearheading the undergraduate branch with the assistance of fellow student Katie DeLong and under the guidance of WNMU Humanities professors Kate Oubre and Dr. Heather Steinmann.

“The SRPD grant was given to me because I wanted to give a couple of students an incentive to work with me as editors. Katie is my first ‘hire,’” Chu said.

As the ambassador-at-large and chief editor, Chu is currently calling for students to submit their work for possible publication and apply to become student editors. “I want to involve as many students as I can, because these skills are helpful in any career,” she said. “Undergraduate students can submit essays, research, and artwork they’ve created during their college career. All they have to do is send it to us through the Mimbres Press student submissions website by April 1, 2022. It’s very low effort to apply with a high reward.”

As the undergraduate arm of Mimbres Press kicks off, journals will be published online. “I hope that, in the near future, we will see a chance for students to see their work in print. Aside from it being a great addition to a resume, I’ve personally found that getting involved in the Mimbres Press at WNMU opens many more doors.”

“The Algorithm of I” reviewed in The Independent

The Independent’s Book Review page describes The Algorithm of I as “… groundbreaking … wondrous.”

Silver City and Grant County Poet Laureate Allison Waterman, who also serves as The Independent’s book critic, writes, “One doesn’t need to read far to be dipped into [the poet’s] world, enraptured by his poetic lingo . . . enlightened by the words he works into such splendid arrangements. . . . This book feels groundbreaking in its function as a provocative read.”
